Aussie Rugby Sevens player makes history in Melbourne
AUSTRALIA’S best-known rugby sevens player has been named the Australian Rugby Sevening Champion.
The Melbourne-based player, nicknamed “Bam Bam” for his love of football, is currently playing in the World Rugby Seven and Sevens Championships in the US.
He has been one of the most successful players in the sport in the past few years, winning two Olympic gold medals and two World Rugby titles.
The 31-year-old made his international debut with the Lions in 2007 and has played for the Wallabies and Australia Under 20s.
His success has also seen him named Player of the Tournament for the 2019 World Rugby U20 Championship and a finalist for the 2018 World Rugby Junior Sevens Series, where he won a bronze medal.
Bam is a regular on the Wallaby squad and his performances have helped the team become a force to be reckoned with in the sevens world.
“He’s just a great player, a great competitor,” Wallaby coach Robbie Deans said.
“His versatility and ability to play a number of positions on the field makes him a fantastic addition to our squad.”
A couple of times this year we’ve had to go into a World Cup with a depleted team.
“BAM Bam is a player we can count on for that type of contribution and we’ll definitely look to add to that squad in the future.”
Bam’s success is not just limited to his rugby sevening career, though.
He is also an accomplished musician and has been performing at venues around Melbourne for many years.
“It’s really been a wonderful life,” he said.
